UPDATE
Capilano Suspension Bridge to
Remain Closed for Clean Up and Repairs
North Vancouver, B.C.
- Capilano Suspension Bridge in North Vancouver will remain closed for
repairs and forest maintenance after heavy snow earlier this week caused
a tree to fall onto the bridge. In other parts of the park branches fell
under the weight of the snow.
The closure also means that the
Canyon Lights festival scheduled for December 16 to January 6 will be
postponed until next year, said bridge spokesperson Sue Kaffka.
"We are not yet sure how long it will
take to repair the bridge," she said. "Engineers will assess the damage
once the tree is removed in the next day or two."
Ms. Kaffka said the bridge and park
would reopen to visitors as soon as repairs and forest maintenance are
completed. "We sincerely regret any inconvenience that may be caused by
the closure of the park and the postponement of Canyon Lights."
"We have hundreds and hundreds of
trees in the park. The heavy snow this week caused many braches to fall
and we need to check to see if any other branches are at risk of falling
before we allow visitors back in," she said.
As a safety precaution the bridge is
closed whenever there is an increased risk of falling branches due to
snowfalls or high winds.
