Capilano Suspension Bridge Closed for Cleanup After Heavy Snowfall Fells Tree

North Vancouver, B.C. - Capilano Suspension Bridge in North Vancouver is closed for clean up and repairs after a heavy snowfall caused a tree to fall onto the bridge. In other parts of the park, branches fell under the weight of the snow.

Bridge spokesperson Sue Kaffka said the tree fell on the south end of the bridge before the park opened on Monday and was discovered when staff arrived for work a few hours later. There was no one in the park at the time.

"Our policy is to close the bridge whenever there is an increased risk of falling branches due to snowfalls or high winds. We sincerely regret any inconvenience to people who were planning to visit the bridge in the next few days. We hope to have parts of the park open as soon as the weather improves and the clean up has been completed," said Ms. Kaffka.

Ms. Kaffka said even if the tree had not fallen on the bridge the park would have been closed today because the snow load on trees had resulted in falling branches throughout the park and the risk of more falling branches remained high.

She suggested that anyone wanting to visit the bridge call ahead at 604-985-7474 to ensure that it is open.

Engineers are inspecting the bridge and will oversee any repairs that are needed. The bridge will remain closed for the time being, but other parts of the park will reopen as soon as the weather improves.
