Capilano Suspension Bridge Celebrates Work of Renowned Tlingit Artist Today

First Nations artist Wayne Carlick unveils his interactive story pole today at Capilano Suspension Bridge

North Vancouver, B.C. - Capilano Suspension Bridge is honouring First Nations artist Wayne Carlick today as he unveils his last story pole for the park.

Mr. Carlick's 13-year career at Capilano Suspension Bridge will be celebrated along with the unveiling of the Honour of the Salmon Pole he began last year as part of Capilano Suspension Bridge's Year of the Salmon. The 14-foot story pole tells the Legend of the Blind Man and includes a unique interactive element for guests visiting the park.

$1.00 from every adult admission on August 23 will be donated to the Pacific Salmon Foundation. Representatives from the foundation will be on-hand to answer questions about the distinctive role salmon play in BC's ecology.

Mr. Carlick began his work at Capilano Suspension Bridge in June, 1993. Over the past 13 years, he has carved seven story poles for the park. With his work  displayed all over the world Mr. Carlick has represented North America at Carving Symposiums in Europe, has been a frequent guest artist at the Smithsonian Institute National Museum of American Indians in New York,  and has been featured on Good Morning America and  the BBC.  In addition to his international accolades, Mr. Carlick was one of ten finalists for his design of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games logo.

Capilano Suspension Bridge was originally built in 1889 and spans 450 feet across and 230 feet above the rushing waters of the Capilano River. The 30-acre attraction is a short 10-minute drive from downtown Vancouver and has been family owned and operated since 1952. The Capilano Suspension Bridge is part of the Capilano Group of Companies, which comprises retail, lodge and attraction businesses including Moraine Lake Lodge and Cathedral Mountain Lodge near Banff, Alberta and a new resort project in Tofino. The Tourism Industry of Canada named Capilano Suspension Bridge Business of the Year at the inaugural National Tourism Excellence Awards in 2003 and Innovator of the Year for the eco-attraction, Treetops Adventure in 2004.
